The Office of Technology Transfer at The Rockefeller University manages and oversees all aspects of commercially relevant intellectual property generated by the University's world class scientific research laboratories. OTT supports the research enterprise at the University through a variety of activities, including scouting for technologies, patenting inventions, finding commercial partners and negotiating transactions with fair and equitable terms, and monitoring post-deal compliance. The office is expanding and looking for hands-on, enthusiastic talent to continue to build on a best-in-class approach to academic technology management and commercialization.

Detailed Description

The Senior Associate Director of Business Development & Licensing will lead the scientific and commercial evaluation of technologies across many scientific disciplines. Will identify research programs at the University that have commercial potential and actively educate investigators on how to de-risk their early-stage technology, make recommendations and decisions about investing the University's resources in a technology disclosed to the office, lead the creation of term sheets, licenses, and other documents related to partnering the University's intellectual property and be comfortable drafting terms in an agreement, negotiating the agreement and closing deals. In collaboration with the Office's internal patent agent, will direct strategy on patent protection and prosecution around a technology and create technology-specific marketing strategies and campaigns, as well as the necessary marketing materials for pitching to potential industry partners. Will identify, mitigate, and resolve risk or conflicts related to intellectual property, patents, partnerships, and related matters that impact the university and perform other related duties as required, including mentoring and training direct reports and additional office members.

Job Requirements

Master's degree in relevant science field required; Ph.D. or MBA preferred. Must have a minimum of 8-10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech or academic tech transfer sectors, significant experience in negotiating license transactions, and a deep understanding of positioning and protecting early-stage technologies in the biosciences that have a high commercial potential. Must be able to understand and evaluate early-stage science and product development, and have a strong track record of successful negotiations and executed complex intellectual property deals. Must have demonstrated success managing a portfolio of assets, coupled with a keen ability to collaborate with Technology Transfer team members on patenting, marketing, contracting, and all other aspects of managing the life cycle of an academic intellectual property portfolio. Strong written and verbal communication skills, coupled with interpersonal skills that seamlessly permit meaningful networking and relationship building, both internally and externally, required. Must thrive in a fast-paced environment and be able to use critical thinking and creativity as an approach to scientific diligence and deal-making. Must have a demonstrated ability to be nimble and innovative to achieve results, often with time and resource constraints, and be able to efficiently share knowledge and information to create meaningful impact and solutions over short and long term horizons.
