Rockefeller University Research Support Specialist in New York, New York

Job Title Research Support Specialist

Laboratory / Department Proteomics Resource Center

Department Description

The Proteomics Resource Center at The Rockefeller University masters most aspects of mass spectrometry based proteomics which includes, denovo sequencing, targeted studies, quantitative proteomics profiling based on label free quantitation as well as metabolic labelled samples (SILAC), chemical labeling, tandem-mass tag technology, absolute quantitation and global post translational analysis. The Center also offers LC-MS based analysis of small molecules, polar metabolites and lipids. Very importantly, the Center is a source for help with planning of mass spectrometry based experiments and the Center have the capability to offer in-depth collaborative analysis. Also, the PRC is operated in a boutique style; encouraging the scientists of the Center to work closely with users to create a tailored approach to fit the many unique questions that can be answered by analytical mass spectrometry.

The PRC are equipped with Orbitrap type mass spectrometers (high resolution/high mass accuracy), operates a triple quadrupole and can separate analytes using both nano and high flow liquid chromatography. The Center is equipped with multiple high performance servers for data analysis.

In addition to analysis by mass spectrometry, the Center offers production of custom peptides and peptide libraries and different pre-mass spectrometry fractionation techniques, which include off-line separation of peptides and proteins by liquid chromatography.

Detailed Description

Reporting to the Director of the Proteomics Resource Center, the Research Support Specialist will be responsible for analyzing samples in close collaboration with many researchers on campus as well as other top institutions. Will maintain and operate nano and high-flow LC coupled to Orbitrap mass spectrometers and related equipment, manage metabolomics compound library and interact with and advise investigators with regard to experiments. Will develop and implement metabolomics and proteomics related protocols in the Center. Will process, analyze, and interpret data and will report findings to investigators and the Director. The Research Support Specialist will generate standard operating procedures, track and submit billing and purchasing information, and monitor and maintain laboratory appearance.

Job Requirements

Master's degree required; Ph.D. preferred. Must have strong analytical and practical skills in protein sample preparation, LC-MS, GCMS, and data analysis and interpretation, excellent communication skills in oral and written English, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and flexibility to interact with a diverse group of researchers. In-depth experience with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry based small molecule analysis, hands-on experience with mass spectrometry, preferably Orbitrap type instruments, and in-depth knowledge of instrument operation and maintenance, data interpretation, and knowledge of background literature necessary. Practical experience with informatics is desirable. Ability to maintain and expand knowledge of mass spectrometry techniques through self-education, dialog with other experts, reading literature, and attending conferences and courses as necessary.
