Department Description

The Comparative Bioscience Center provides a comprehensive program of animal care in support of the University's in vivo research. The goal of our staff is to provide investigators with the highest level of research support at the lowest cost while ensuring the welfare of the animals used in the research. The center is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).

Detailed Description

The Group Leader is responsible for the direct oversight of five to six animal husbandry technicians and their assigned rooms. Must monitor work activity and makes adjustments to schedules as needed. The Husbandry Group Leader has regularly scheduled rooms to maintain, including daily care of animals, general health observations, cage changing, room sanitation, provision of food, water, and maintenance of animal records. The Group Leader is responsible for maintaining consumable supplies as needed by the technicians and investigators and monitoring the physical plant for deficiencies. They will train all new employees, reinforce standard operating procedures with all employees as needed, and resolve conflicts between technicians, technicians, and investigators.

Job Requirements

The Group Leader must have a high school diploma and a minimum certification at the ALAT level. Additional physical requirements include, but are not limited to; ability to push/pull carts on weight-bearing wheels weighing a minimum of 500 lbs, lift supplies that can weigh up to 50 lbs., tolerate a significant amount of standing, bending, and walking; must not be allergic to animals, waste products or bedding. Requirements are subject to change as a result of facility needs.
